Go Hollywood or Japanese for fewer wrinkles!
Skin guru Lee Garrett, of The Garrett Clinic, Harley Street, explains why our pillows could be ageing us…
Silk or satin sheets which do not rub or pull the skin on your face when sleeping could result in fewer wrinkles.
Lee Garrett, skin guru at The Garrett Clinic, Harley Street and a specialist in aesthetic anti-ageing treatments, says swapping your pillowcases for a smooth, silk or silk satin one will reduce friction and, in just a few weeks, could make a difference to your complexion.
In the golden years of Hollywood stars would always sleep in silk or satin bedding… clearly they’d worked out the benefits!
Japanese women have always known that pillows cause wrinkles and they discipline themselves to sleep mainly on their backs. But involuntary movement during sleep makes it difficult to be so self-controlled.
Lee Garrett says: “The constant dragging of your face against cotton pillows can cause the skin to stretch and cause lines and wrinkles on your cheeks and/or forehead.
“Swapping to a silk or silk satin pillowcase will reduce the friction, or dragging, and would prevent these sleep lines.
“Wrinkles are caused by the loss of collagen and elasticity in our skin, volume loss or redistribution of fat can also aid towards wrinkle formation.
“The same can be said for rough handling and stretching of the skin while cleansing. Many people are guilty of this. Fingers should glide over the skin (as in a facial) not drag at it or rub it.
“And sitting for prolonged periods of time with your cheek pushed against your hand while resting, could also stretch the skin and, as we age, stretched skin does not bounce back into shape.”
If years of sleeping on cotton pillows have prematurely aged you, see Lee Garrett for his recommendations on anti-ageing treatments at the clinic.
